1. DISCOM Signal Support - Heavy Division using ATACS.
a. The DISCOM has a headquarters and headquarters company/materiel management center
(HHC/MMC), a main support battalion (MSB), three forward support battalions (FSB), and an aircraft
maintenance company (AMCO). The DISCOM command post (CP) is usually located n the division
rear area. The HHC/MMC and the main support battalion are normally located in the DSA.
b. The DISCOM units in the DSA normally access the area communications system through the
non MSE-equipped signal battalion DISCOM/division rear CP node. In some cases, the MSB may not
be collocated with the DISCOM CP, but tie in through various switchboards based on the tactical
situation. The AMCO ties into the area system based on location, normally the division airfield.
c. The FSBs access the division communications system through signal extensions. These
signal extensions are installed and operated by a signal extension platoon of the forward
communications company of the division signal battalion.
d. The division command operations company of the division signal battalion provides a signal
extension node at the DISCOM CP/division rear CP (Figure 2-1).
Figure 2-1. DISCOM extension
As Figure 2-1 illustrates, the DISCOM CP/division rear CP is a major node of activity
for signal soldiers.
This signal center is in multichannel and single-channel radio
systems among the DISCOM, its battalions, and corps. The communications nodal control element
