LIMITATIONS OF MAGNETIC RECORDING

One of the most important factors that limit high frequency response is the width of the gap in
the playback head. The effect arises because the output of the playback head depends on the total flux
across the gap. At low frequencies no effect is discernible. However, when the frequency increases
until the distance on tape occupied by one-half wavelength is less than the gap width, parts of both
positive and negative half cycles appear across the gap simultaneously and start to cancel each other (fig
1-6).
