Multipair telephone cable generally falls into two classifications:
inside plant and outside plant. Outside plant cables are usually sheathed
in lead or a special grade of plastic to withstand weathering. Inside plant
cables (also called switchboard cables) are usually sheathed with soft
plastic or fabric since they are normally protected from weather. Outside
