Figure 2-14. Joint Tactical Information Distribution System
(c) JTIDS is an advanced data system which is used to transmit air defense information
between sister services and within Army corps and division air defense units. JTIDS is a multiservice
program; however, the Air Force has led in its development. The Air Force uses the E-3A Airborne
Warning and Control System (AWACS) as the platform that obtains early identification of aircraft. This
information is sent to both naval units and Army ground-based units. The Air Force uses a combat
reporting center (CRC) and the Army has the AN/TSQ-73 air defense center. The Army JTIDS system
uses the class 2M terminal (Figure 2-14) to process the air defense picture, with its large array of
aircraft. Figure 2-15, page 2-25, illustrates a typical air defense scenario. JTIDS messages are
transmitted from an AWACS aircraft to ground-based units. JTIDS, used extensively during Operation
Desert Storm, provided a comprehensive display of the air picture and played a significant part in
preventing mid-air collisions of friendly aircraft.
