Lesson 1/Learning Event 1
(1) Binding posts.
The simplest connectors are spring-loaded binding
posts to which are attached single wires. These simple devices are very
useful in tactical applications for attachment of field wires. The basic
their lack of flexibility when rapid circuit changes are necessary.
(2) Multiple connectors.
Some advanced multi-channel facilities use
multiple-contact plugs and sockets.
Many circuits may thus be
interconnected with one operation.
Although this method is highly
convenient and saves time, it lacks flexibility.
(3) Special-purpose connectors.
Sometimes special-purpose connectors
are
needed
because
of
the
special
conditions
imposed
by
the
characteristics of the signals.
Examples of special-purpose connectors
are spiral-four and coaxial connectors.
Normally, broadband signals
require the use of special-purpose connectors because of the relatively
(4) Jacks and plugs.
By far the most widely used interconnecting
mating plugs are attached to the ends of patch cords.
This arrangement
gives the operator the greatest possible degree of circuit interconnection
flexibility.
e. Loop- and In-Side Interface.
Most communication circuits are
connected in voice loops or in telegraph loops because ordinary wire pairs
can be used, individual channels are involved, and signal compatibility is
easier to achieve.
(1) Telephone carrier terminal equipment is ordinarily used to
multiplex
several
channels
of
communication
in
long-distance
Each of the several channels has a VF loop to which a
telephone or other VF circuit is attached.
The line side combines the
several signals from groups and supergroups into a wideband composite
baseband.
(2) Interfacing of telephone carrier terminals can be accomplished by
interconnecting either the telephone loops or the carrier terminal lines.
However, to maintain compatibility, only loops cat be interfaced with
loops, and only lines can be interfaced with lines; they cannot be
intermixed.
Further, the baseband usually requires a special type of
cable such as coaxial, while the VF channel loop needs only an ordinary
telephone pair.
