5.
Operating frequencies are assigned to specific nets.
The assignment
pattern makes tracking difficult if not impossible. Operating frequencies
are changed in conjunction with call signs.
Changes to operating
frequencies are made by secure means.
6.
Operational procedures are the most critical consideration in
Areas to be checked for transmission
security in relation to operating procedures are detailed below.
7.
Net discipline cannot be maintained without the cooperation of each
operator. Operation in accordance with prescribed procedures and security
instructions is the responsibility of operators and their supervisors. Net
discipline includes:
calling and answering correctly, using authorized
prosigns and prowords, operating at a reasonable speed, using correct call
signs, using effective authentication, and limiting transmissions to
official traffic.
8.
transmissions.
Authentication remains the best defense against imitative
deception.
Operator alertness and readiness to authenticate must be
emphasized. A station waits for a reply to an authentication challenge no
longer than 15 seconds.
If a reply is received after that time, a new
challenge is issued.
Your unit SOI provides instructions on the
authentication system to use and when to authenticate.
9.
Operators will not use personal signs, names, and other identifiers
while passing traffic. Traffic passed must be limited to official messages
only.
Unofficial chatter between operators is not authorized and
deteriorates any security that has been established.
Preparation and
transmission of service and procedural messages should be accomplished in
accordance with prescribed procedures.
10. As always, prevention is the greatest portion of the cure. Preventing
detection by the enemy begins before operation of the radio station. Proper
siting of the transmitting antenna on the reverse slope of a hill reduces
enemy success in interception and direction finding. Minimum power, within
requirements, should be used. Excess power increases your vulnerability to
interception.
When tuning or testing radio equipment, a dummy antenna
should be used.
These measures, when used in conjunction with proper
operational procedures, significantly increase the survivability of your
team.
11. Adherence to the procedures described is enforced by the net control
station.
However, without proper emphasis from supervisors, problems will
continue to occur. Thorough training of operators is the best way to ensure
security measures are followed.
