Since the attenuator control knob rest on -10 dB, the meter-circuit
the meter reading of +1 VU of a constant-level
tone indicates that a signal level 1 dB higher than -10 VU is coming into
the meter circuit amplifier, or -9 VU.
If the meter has been previously
calibrated to register 0 VU on 0 dBm input, then the level of the constant
tone can also be called -9 m.
However, a speech signal cannot be called
that value in dBm because of the varying amplitude nature of speech. Speech
must always be referred to in terms of VU.
