Installation of Protector and Drop Wire.
After you have received the authorization, DA form 3938, to install the telephone substation
you will gather your materials and tools and proceed to the location designated on the DA Form 3938.
You will contact the person identified on the form and determine the location of the instrument. Once
you both agree as to the location of the instrument you will then proceed with the installation.

Preinstallation Checks.
One of the first things you will have to do is locate the pole identified on your DA Form
3938. Having accomplished this you will then have to proceed with the installation. You must
remember to check for obstruction around the base of the pole. Should you slip or a step come out when
you hit the ground you do not want to hit a foreign object too. So you must check for and remove all
foreign objects around the base. Are there any power lines in the area? If so, where are they? How will
they affect your mission? There are guidelines to follow when you are installing communications lines
in the vicinity of power lines. Refer to Table 1, page 16, for distances to be observed when working
close to power lines.
