Learning Event 1:
DESCRIBE THE FUNCTION OF ANY CAMERA SYSTEM
1.
Image conversion is the principal function of any camera system regard
less of media. It involves the theory of light and optical principles and
chemical processes for film cameras, and electronic engineering for video
cameras. In the following section we will discuss the theory of brightness
transfer characteristics, evaluate systems capabilities, and identify the
gamma factor.
2.
Transfer characteristic: The transfer characteristic, in its simplest
terms, is the function which expresses the relationship between the
luminance amplitudes of the system output and the system input. However, it
must be remembered that each element of the system (the pickup tube,
amplifiers, detectors, etc.) has a transfer characteristic.
In the final
analysis it is the relationship between all these elements that determines
the overall transfer characteristic of the system.
