b. The theater tactical communications network extends from the rear of the combat
zone (corps rear boundary) to the sea (water's edge) and encompasses the area between the
combat forces and the theater's source of personnel and materiel support. This area is called the
communications zone (COMMZ). Army headquarters and units will be widely dispersed in the
COMMZ. To best satisfy the communications requirements, area signal nodes will be
established. These area nodes form the backbone of the TCS(A). They are located based on
geography, functional requirements, and troop density. Area nodes are normally dispersed
