(5) The area nodes are dispersed anywhere from 40 to 241 kilometers. Depending on
distance and terrain, the area nodes are interconnected via cable, troposcatter, high frequency
(HF) radio, LOS radio, satellite radio, or a combination. The key piece of equipment at the
theater area node is the automatic circuit switch-the AN/TTC-39. This switch provides rapid,
reliable automatic switching for all subscribers. The planning goal (not always achieved) is for
each area node to be connected to four other area nodes to provide alternate routing if one or two
nodes are damaged or destroyed by enemy action.
(6) Figure 3-2 shows the typical command links of a TCS(A). These links, which
provide direct connectivity between major commands within the theater, rely on long-haul
transmission systems (satellite, troposcatter, and HF radios). In this example, satellite
communications (SATCOM) terminals (AN/TSC-85B and AN/TSC-93B) provide the command
links.
