Internal Wire Systems. An air defense battalion uses wire to interconnect elements of the
battalion headquarters to the battalion tactical operations center (TOC) switchboard. Figures 2-8 and 2-
9, pages 2-7 and 2-8, illustrate these systems. Because of the distances involved, field wire lines are not
usually installed directly between the battalion TOC and its firing batteries, as indicated in the diagrams.
Due to frequent and rapid moves, and to keep up with the displacement of supported units, single-
channel radio is the primary means of communications within the air defense battalion. However, where
practical, wire communications are established to interconnect a firing battery headquarters with each of
its firing platoons and each firing platoon to each of its firing units. Figure 2-10, page 2-9, depicts this
wire system. The ATACS uses the TA-312 telephone. As MSE is fielded, the TA-312s are being taken
out of the inventory.
