primary mission of reconnaissance. There are three distinct types of reconnaissance that may be
performed by division reconnaissance elements: route, zone, and area. As with all missions, depending
on the level performed, they may be a separate mission or part of another operation. Reconnaissance
activities will be influenced when NBC weapons are introduced into the battlefield environment. Figure
3-3 depicts a reconnaissance team.
(b) When tasking reconnaissance missions, commanders, and staff planners must
consider the time element. Reconnaissance operations normally are detailed and time consuming in
execution and require a knowledge of the following employment fundamentals:
Maintain maximum reconnaissance force forward.
Orient on the location or movement of the reconnaissance objective.
Report all information rapidly and accurately.
Retain freedom to maneuver.
