units quickly for survivability while still providing required fire support. Fire support is a division total
effort which relies on the decisions of the division commander and his staff. To achieve
synchronization, the fire support system's command and control allows for rapid transmission of
information and data to interface with all fire support systems to include other services. Figure 3-5
depicts an M198 155mm towed howitzer.
d. Air defense.
(1) Division air defense operations consist of all activities that degrade the adverse effects of
enemy air attack of friendly units, supplies, and facilities. This includes Air Force and naval aviation,
counter air operations, camouflage, detection, and direct and indirect fires. All units in the division
conduct both passive and active air defense. Figure 3-6 illustrates a Patriot missile launch.
(2) The division air defense system
is capable of limited protection of maneuver and
critical CS and CSS forces. It provides the
division commander the flexibility he requires
to maneuver on the battlefield. The air defense
system identifies and engages enemy aircraft
before friendly forces can be attacked. The
system has the capability to engage targets
simultaneously to support division close, deep,
Airspace Command and Control (A2C2) element
in the main command post (CP) to ensure rapid
transmission of data, to coordinate fires, and to
protect friendly airspace.
In an NBC
environment, the capability of employing air
defense systems will be as enhanced or
degraded as any other system. Effects include
having to disperse, thus reducing the ability to
have overlapping protection (redundancy).

e. Intelligence.
(1) The division intelligence and Intelligence electronic warfare (IEW) effort is supported by
agile and flexible systems and units that provide the capability to locate and attack the threat in support
of close, deep, and rear operations. Particular attention is made to recognize, identify, and target NBC
equipment and installation when operating in an NBC potential environment. The intelligence
preparation of the battlefield (IPB) must also consider the presence of NBC weapons when operating in
a potential NBC environment. Intelligence and IEW elements provide the division early warning which
allows for rapid decision making.
