4. Summary. In this lesson, you learned the organization and mission of fire support units, and the role of the
signal officer in FA unit.
a. Fire support units provide continuous and timely support to combat units by locating, identifying, and
neutralizing or destroying those targets most likely to impede the successful accomplishment of the division's
mission.
b. A heavy division DIVARTY has a HHB, three 155mm self-propelled howitzer battalions, one MLRS
battery, and one TAB.
c. A light division DIVARTY has a HHB, three 105mm towed howitzer battalion, and one 155mm towed
howitzer battery.
d. An airborne or an air assault division DIVARTY has a HHB and three 105mm towed-howitzer battalions.
e. At DIVARTY HQ and the FA battalions, the signal officer works under the staff supervision of the S3.
The signal officer is responsible to the commander for all signal support matters.
