Single-Channel Radio Planning Considerations
(1) The terrain characteristics where the operation will be
conducted are especially critical for single-channel FM radio
operations.
To achieve reliable communications, line-of-sight (LOS)
must be achieved among all stations in a net or retransmission sites
must be employed.
(2) The reliability of radio communications depends greatly on
selecting good radio sites. Excellent sites for radio communications
are high hills and elevated terrain which provide good LOS, and level
moist ground which provides good grounding and conductivity.
Valleys, underpasses, and areas where high tension lines are located
(3) Frequency management is critical to single-channel radio
operations.
To reduce net interference and obtain good radio wave
propagation, the signal officer ensures that optimum frequencies are
available through continual coordination with the division signal
battalion.
Radio is the least secure means of communication, and interception
can occur every time a transmitter is placed in operation.
