Station Protection Requirements.
Fuseless station protectors should be used at all stations served by a cable with a grounded
metal sheath, such as lead, alpeth, stalpeth, etc. The fuseless protectors should be installed when single
pair drop wire is used at stations served by open or multiple wire when the protector can be grounded as
follows--
a. A metalic cold water pipe having at least 10 feet buried.
b. A metalic cold water pipe bonded to a multigrounded neutral system.
c. Service ground of a multigrounded neutral power system.
d. Metalic service entrance conduit (except aluminum) bonded to the service entrance box of a
multigrounded neutral system.
Except as described in a and b above a fused protector must be used.
5.
Locating protectors inside.
The location of protectors inside of buildings is governed by the following--
a. Available points of entrance for drop wire.
b. Location of approved protector ground.
c. Location of telephone.
d. Available mounting surface for the protector.
Place the protector where it is accessible for inspection and maintenance, and where those making the
inspection or repairs will not be exposed to contact with power wires, moving machinery, etc. Do not
mount the protector near inflammable materials or in a room where dust or combustible gas is in the
atmosphere, but mount it in a dry, well-ventilated location.
