Mount the protector at least 1 foot from electric light or power lines, meters, accessories, and gas and
water meters (unless the protector is mounted in the same cabinet as the other services).
Locating Protectors outside.
If a suitable location for the protector cannot be found inside the building, place it on the outside of the
building in a place well sheltered from rain, sleet, and snow. The preferred location for a protector is
outside. Protectors may be installed horizontally, however, never install the protector with one fuse
above the other. In the vertical position mount them so that their centers are at least 5 inches apart.
Mount the protector on backboards or solid wooden surfaces using 1 1/4 inch, no 10 roundhead blued
wood screws, Figure 34; on wooden lath and plaster use 2 inch, No 10 roundhead, blued wood screws.

Wiring Protectors.
When terminating wires at all substation protectors, end the insulation approximately 1/8
inch from terminal washers, wrap conductors 3/4 turn around the terminal lug in a clockwise direction
and between washers. Ground wires go behind the washers and in front of the lock washer in a
clockwise motion. Covers must be installed on protectors mounted outside. All fused protectors are
similar in construction and therefore are wired basically the same. The drop wire is connected to
terminals marked L, the inside wire is connected to terminals marked I, and the ground wire is
connected to the terminals marked G, Figures 35 and 36.
