The transmission and reception of messages is the primary function of
communications personnel.
Properly prepared and handled messages are
essential for the accurate delivery of information. This lesson details the
proper procedures for preparing, handling, and processing messages.

The joint message form, DD Form 173 is used for preparing messages.
DD Form 173 is printed and stocked in three styles. DD Form 173/1 (Figure
3-1) is printed in black ink and is used for manual preparation of messages.
DD Forms 173/2 and 173/3 are printed in red and blue ink, respectively, and
are used with optical character recognition equipment (OCRE).
