INTRODUCTION
The installation of a telephone substation consists of a number of distinct steps in which different
materials are used. It can be considered as a series of separate jobs, each one important to the final
results. Outside installation consists of installing the drop wire from the terminal up to and including the
substation protector or any drop or block wiring on the outside of the building. The location of the
substation protector is governed by the installation and is the connecting point between the drop or
outside wire to the inside wire. Although the protector may be installed on either the inside or outside of
the building, it is the point where the outside wire connects to the inside wire. The inside wire run must
meet several conditions. It must be neat in appearance. It is installed so that as much of the wire as
possible is concealed. The exposed wire is arranged neatly and as inconspicuously as possible. It must
be fastened securely to prevent an unsightly appearance, and protected from any possible injury so that it
will not become unserviceable. The person using the telephone determines its location. If the location
is difficult or impossible the installer should discuss the situation with the user, until a location
satisfactory to both is found. The connection at the terminal is the last step in installing drop wire.
While wiring at the terminal is properly classified as part of the drop wiring on the pole, the actual
connection at the terminal will be the last step.
In this lesson we will be concerned with learning the steps involved in the installation and
troubleshooting of a telephone substation. In addition, we will be discussing safety steps the
installer/troubleshooter should know and use in his daily work.
After you have completed this subcourse, you will be able to properly install and troubleshoot a
telephone substation. This subcourse consists of three lessons, and a performance (hands-on
w/equipment) end-of-subcourse practice exercise, which are all related to the following terminal
learning objectives:
