When working on a ladder be sure the top is positioned at least two (2) feet above the area where you
will be working. If there is another person available, your helper, you should position that person at the
bottom of the ladder to prevent it from slipping back and down from the designated working area.
Improper use of ladders cause many accidents and accidents are caused, not just happen. When placing
the extention ladder against a building, the rule is, the bottom of the ladder should be 1/4 the height of
the ladder from the building. In other words, if you are going to climb to 20 feet; the bottom of the
ladder should be 5 feet from the building Figure 4. Figures 5, 6, 7 show the incorrect positioning of the
feet when the ladder is against the building ready for use. Although an aluminum ladder is shown,
remember to always use a wooden ladder for your safety.
