LEARNING EVENT 1:
Safety/First Aid.
1.
SAFETY.
Safety and first aid is everyone's business. All personnel working around voltage of any value should
always be safety conscious and be able to perform first aid to their friend and working buddy. Hard hats
will be worn whenever installing, troubleshooting or recovering any telephone substation. Objects
falling or dropped from a ladder or a person on a telephone pole make a definite impression in the
ground or on a person who happens to be hit by the item. Tools are heavy and have sharp points and
thus can be very dangerous if dropped.

Remove all jewelry. Rings, watches, and necklaces are metal and make a very good conductor of
electricity. It is not the high voltage that can cause harm but the amperage that can and does cause
death. No one should be working on any object that can or does have voltage on without taking
precautions.
Figure 2. Jewelry.
Ladders should be wooden. Where possible ALWAYS use a wood ladder. The new aluminum ladders
look nice, do not splinter, and last much longer. However, they do have the capability of carrying high
voltages and provide a direct contact between the cable and ground. If you are on the aluminum ladder
when it accidentally carries voltage to the ground, you too will feel that voltage going through your
body. Whenever possible, use two persons to carry a ladder. This provides for a person at each end.
This also helps prevent turning around with the ladder on your shoulder and hitting a person, or object
and causing harm or injury to the person or object.
